December 15 2009, 7:53 AM

OEMAccording to China Unicom, up to 80% of all iPhones used and available in China are fake. However, there is still a large demand for the smuggled phones, as they are generally cheaper. The smuggled phones have apparently some original iPhone parts - encased in a fake handset. A vendor told China Daily that mainly young people want to have a fashionable and 'cool' gadget - the major reason why the demand for the smuggled phones is still so high.

Good old fashioned grey market... fake the scraping of "defective" phones and then sell them off to houses that finish the build with fake parts. Chances are it is the the major EMS that is the source, and it takes a lot of profit sharing to make the scheme work.
